Key Capabilities Required for Innovation and Development of Defense Complex Products and Systems

Abstract

Majority of defense product and systems belong to complex product systems. In the other hand, specific capabilities are required to innovate and develop these complex product and systems. So, this research aims at investigating on key capabilities required for innovation and development of defense complex products and systems, through applying Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) method. In order to verify and categorize identified capabilities from research background, we used opinions of some experts from defense industries. Furthermore, through distributing questionnaires among defense industries managers and specialists, both importance of capabilities and performance of defense industries in establishing and enhancing these capabilities were evaluated. Our findings show that, defense organizations and industries should create and improve these capabilities respectively: 1. Intra and inter organizational knowledge management; 2. Market and customer relationship management; 3. System integration; 4. Networking, interaction and collaboration; 5. technological; 6. Planning and management of mega projects; 7. Test, manufacturing and production.
